Demographic
As of the 2010 Census, West Kensington was 71.7% Hispanic, 17.2% African American, 5% white, 2.9% Asian, 3.1% all various other. Historically it had been a heavily Irish-American neighborhood. Today the community is largely populated by Latinos, but also has significant populations of Irish Americans, Italian Americans, and African Americans.
Health
Kensington Hospital is the second earliest Healthcare facility in the City of Philly. It was founded in 1887 by Dr. Howard Atwood Kelly, a worldwide renowned specialist, as well as clinical pioneer. The Kelly forceps were named for Dr. Kelly as a result of his efficiency of abdominal surgeries widely believed to be difficult at the time. Dr. Kelly went on to be the Principal of OB/GYN at the freshly formed Johns Hopkins Medical facility.
Kensington Hospital was originally called “Kensington Hospital for Women” and treated diseases specific for women, fertility, delivery and pregnancy issues. Many babies were born at Kensington Hospital. Kensington Hospital has been served the community for over 120 years and is the only bilingual/bicultural hospital in Philadelphia.
